Hi everyone, I am Zana. The newest tactician here at TACK10.

I have been given the pen this week to share my journey and my perspective on our #WordoftheWeek #Inspired. I will take you through my story and share how my unique life experience has shaped me both personally and professionally.

Beginnings
I was born in a small Eastern European country by the name of Bosnia and Herzegovina. I entered the world in the basement of an army hospital with no electricity, smack dab in the middle of a civil war. I was a ’surprise’ baby that wasn’t meant to come during such a tumultuous time. Being a newborn during wartime, I received numerous care packages from organizations like UNICEF and The Red Cross. These packages not only saved my life (providing me with food, clothing, and diapers) but they inadvertently saved my family’s life too. We received so much aid – that it ended up feeding and clothing my older siblings and parents as well.

My family emigrated to Canada shortly after the war was over, knowing we could never live the same life in our home country again. As a 4 year old, I quickly adjusted to life in Canada – I felt as if I had always been a Canadian. However, there was always a part of me that never forgot where I came from and those who helped me. This has impacted many aspects of my life.

Inspired
War and political upheaval not only tore my country apart but are tearing apart many others around the world to this day. This violence has sucked in large numbers of vulnerable children into exploitation and combat. I am inspired every day by the children of war, the innocents as I like to call them – who live each day knowing it might be their last. I am inspired by their ability to still see hope in the midst of tragedy. I am inspired by their bravery, to attend school despite the uncertainty of stepping out onto their front steps. In the past 10 years, an estimated 10 million children have been killed as a result of war. I see myself in each and every one of them, but I know that I am one of the lucky ones. I am a child that survived and was lucky enough to leave and build a better life with my family. Many of these children will not end up so lucky, which is why I am passionate about causes that have the ability to help. A delivery of diapers, food, and toiletries is something so small in the grand scheme of things but make such a big impact in the lives of these children and their families.

Why TACK10
Finding a job was always different for me than to that of my peers in school. Most people were franticly trying to land any job that would take them, whereas I didn’t feel the same way. It was always important to me to work in a place that was interested in making a positive impact in the world. I found that most companies only did the bare minimum, having social responsibility almost as an afterthought. TACK10 fell into my lap when I least expected it, but I knew it was going to be a place where I would be inspired by the work being done and the differences being made. Just from being here a couple of days, I can already tell that this is a company that does things differently. They are equally as dedicated to providing a comprehensive set of integrated partnership services as they are to delivering a positive social, environmental and economic impact for the communities in which they operate.

Final Bell
In my experience, sometimes those that keep you #Inspired don’t necessarily have to be above you. Sure, I am inspired daily by the brilliant men and women who work for kick-ass organizations that help better the lives of children of war – but my biggest inspiration comes from those children themselves. This inspiration has led me to this point in my life, TACK10, where I get to work with some amazing people on projects that combine strategy and a direct impact in the lives of others. I encourage everyone to find what inspires them and let that lead the way they make choices both in their professional and personal lives.
